African Swine Fever (ASFv) is a virus that is ravaging the pig industry in China, Vietnam, and is spreading to other countries.  It is easily spread from pigs, meat, feed, water, and tracked from farm to farm by people, vehicles, and other equipment.  While not a threat to human health, ASFv has the potential to rapidly affect the World food supply.  China has lost up to 40% of its pig population. Vietnam has lost 10% of its herd in a very short time.  ASFv has recently spread to Cambodia and is not far from the Thailand border.

While not currently in the United States, ASFv is a significant concern to the USDA, and the US Pork industry.  The National Pork Producers Council(NPPC), canceled their 2019 World Pork Expo that annually has over 20,000 attendees from all over the World.  ASFv is so infectious, the NPPC Board of Directors decided that they could not risk having people from ASFv infected countries attend and exhibit for risk of introducing ASFv to the US pig industry.

Companies such as Qiagen and Thermo Fisher have developed qPCR tests for African Swine Fever, but the process of sending a sample to a lab for testing risks spreading the virus. Farms are having to set up on farm laboratories.  While very large commercial farms have the means to set up their own labs, it is ideal for centralized testing by well- trained laboratory personnel in commercial/Government laboratories to conduct surveillance testing.

PrimeStore MTM, which has already been cleared by the US FDA for microbial inactivation, has been under extreme testing at the USDA Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (FADDL) at Plum Island for the last three years.  The most recent testing results are pending publication.  PrimeStore MTM is already being used Worldwide for animal surveillance.  In consultation with the FADDL leadership, a special configuration of PrimeStore MTM will be launched to ensure sample to PrimeStore MTM ratios are appropriately maintained by end users when testing samples that might contain High Consequence Pathogens (HCP) such as ASFv, Classical Swine Fever (CSFv) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMDv).  The new configuration will be known as PrimeStore MTM HCP.   Type your paragraph here.
